Is this world populated by just humans, or are there some other races involved here?

Races, species & critters, oh my!

We've built a foundation on humans - we're a pretty diverse group, really - but already a few strange groups of non-humans are showing up: m'teoulin and sand devils. I suspect more will appear as the world continues to grow.

One of our goals is to avoid using the current fantasy standards - elves, gnomes, dwarves, orcs - and encourage artisans to create original races, monsters, etc. with interesting backgrounds, cultures and behaviors. Traditional creatures are cool, but innovate a fresh slant, a new feel that is unique to the world of RoG, and everyone will be the better for it.

of course upon checking out the wiki, it might be redundant, but the idea i have is a goblinoid race rather than humanoid.

goblinoid race

Make them fun, frightening and interesting. Place them in a spot that fits their background & culture. Consider how their emergence from beneath the earth is impacting the area - animals, people, nature. Make them more than the ubiquitous goblins currently found throughout the fantasy genre.

An adventure world can seldom have too many good villains!

what i was thinking was a creature that dwells in the dark, the size of a large dog with a large head big teeth and insatiable apatite for human flesh. but the majority of them are mindless. they are broken up in clusters of a couple hundred creatures all being controled by a few masters as almost a hive mind. the masters are huge, even more vicious and deviously intelligent.

Vicious & deviously intelligent?

Sounds like the perfect formula for a creature to plague humanity, stalk dark places and make people fear the night... :-)

The hive mind definitely opens the door to all sorts of interesting story angles, puzzles and adventures. Discovering the "Masters" can be a complete adventure on its own after a series of dealing with the mindless critters.

Please don't hesitate to leave lots of unanswered questions when they are first encountered in your story. The unknown is a fertile breeding ground for cultivating dread and creating an urgent desire to know more. It brings a smile to my face when I recall the sheer fun of the first reveal of "Mom" in ALIENS (a sequel, mind you!). She was well worth the wait.

Definitely sounds interesting. Feature them in a story, picture, rpg module, comic, etc. That's the only way to add them to the world of Gallidon.

I like the idea of using a name the locals call them and keeping the 'true' name a secret. Draws out the suspense for a series of stories/adventures or longer tale.
